The Opportunity

This is more than just a contract role - it's an opportunity to support the safety and assurance of complex, mission-critical systems within the UK defence sector.

As a Senior Safety Engineer, you will play a key role in supporting the safety lifecycle of advanced engineering systems, ensuring robust safety processes are embedded from concept through to delivery and in-service support.

Working within a specialist engineering team, you will collaborate across multiple disciplines to influence design decisions, mitigate risk, and help deliver safe, reliable solutions across high-profile defence programmes.

This role would suit an experienced engineer looking to apply their expertise within a technically challenging and highly regulated environment.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Delivering safety engineering activities across complex defence programmes
  • Supporting hazard identification, risk assessment and mitigation activities
  • Conducting and contributing to safety studies including HAZOP, FFA, FTA, FMECA and LOPA
  • Defining system safety requirements and supporting safety targets
  • Producing high-quality safety cases, reports and technical documentation
  • Participating in design reviews, risk meetings and safety committees
  • Working closely with systems, hardware, software and project teams to ensure safe design outcomes
  • Providing clear, evidence-based safety recommendations to key stakeholders

What We Are Looking For

  • Previous experience within a safety engineering environment, ideally defence, aerospace, maritime or other highly regulated sectors
  • Strong understanding of functional or product safety principles
  • Familiarity with recognised safety standards such as IEC 61508 and Def Stan 00-056
  • Knowledge of hardware/software failure modes and reliability principles
  • Experience with hazard analysis, FMECA, FTA or similar techniques
  • Ability to work effectively within multi-disciplinary engineering teams
  • Degree, HND, HNC or equivalent experience in Engineering or related discipline
